Opening Night: Holocaust Distortion, Myths & Misinformation

Holocaust Education Centres and Museums were established to protect Holocaust memory and facts from denial and distortion, and with the help of survivors were able to secure the Shoah’s memory from bad faith attacks. However, today these institutions find themselves at a turning point – the once stable moral and intellectual ground that Holocaust Education was built upon is shifting after being profoundly shaken by social media, contemporary hate, and the acceleration of the post-truth milieu.
Join the Neuberger for Holocaust Education Week 2021, where we will consider what it means to commemorate the Holocaust in an environment of emboldened antisemitism, bigotry, conspiracism, paranoia, and extremism. How can Holocaust educators and scholars maintain consensuses on truth, particularly at a time when we are losing the last of the survivors? Our diverse range of programs for HEW 2021 will address this vital question.
Opening Night features Dr. Robert Williams who will contextualize the current state of Holocaust distortion and misinformation, setting the stage for a keynote conversation between Andrew Marantz and Erin Sylvester. They will discuss how social media and online environments have played a role in creating our current situation, and what can be done about it.

Featuring
Andrew Marantz is a journalist who writes about technology, social media, and the alt-right for The New Yorker. He is the author of Antisocial: Online Extremists, Techno-Utopians, and the Hijacking of the American Conversation. His work has also appeared in Harper’s, New York Magazine, Mother Jones, and the New York Times.
Erin Sylvester is the Acting Managing Editor and former Head of Research for The Walrus. Her work has been published in The Walrus, The Ryerson Review of Journalism, Torontoist, and the Calgary Herald.
Dr. Robert Williams is Deputy Director for International Affairs at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, on the steering committee of the Global Task Force on Holocaust Distortion, and served for four years as chair of the Committee on Antisemitism and Holocaust Denial at the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance.

Curating the New Museum: Envisioning the Future of Holocaust Education in Toronto

Join us for an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the curation of the future Toronto Holocaust Museum, opening in 2023 on the Sherman Campus. Learn about this exciting project from the experts working on its development, get a glimpse into the museum’s representation of Kristallnacht and catch a special teaser film exploring one of the core elements of the new exhibit space: survivor testimony – both newly captured and preserved archival footage tailored for a cutting-edge, interactive, large-format presentation designed to engage the students of the future. The program will include a commemoration in honour of the 83rd anniversary of the Kristallnacht pogrom.
