The Legacy Portrait Project

A Special International Holocaust Remembrance Day Program

Thursday, January 26, 2023 / 7pm
Leah Posluns Theatre
PROSSERMAN JCC / 4588 BATHURST STREET

This year in honour of International Holocaust Remembrance Day the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center for Holocaust Studies, in partnership with the Holocaust Education Centre, and the Azrieli Foundation present the premiere screening of The Legacy Portrait Project, a short documentary that captures the relationship between Holocaust survivors and their grandchildren. The conversations filmed in the documentary capture a moment in time, a glimpse into the individual triumph of each survivor, having prevailed over evil by building families, finding love and joy after the Holocaust.

The program will also include special remarks from Holocaust survivor Pinchas Gutter.

WHAT IS INTERNATIONAL HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE DAY?

January 27 marks the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp. In 2005, the United Nations General Assembly designated this day as International Holocaust Remembrance Day (IHRD)*, an annual day of commemoration to honour the victims of the Nazi era.

*Designated by the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 60/7 on 1 November 2005.

The Neuberger first commemorated International Holocaust Remembrance Day in 2010.

The Holocaust Education Centre’s International Holocaust Remembrance Day programs are supported by the Yakubowicz Family in honour of Esther and Mirko Bem and Perla and Sam Yakubowicz.
