Holocaust Education for English-Language Learners

We're proud to offer interactive seminars specially designed for English Language Learners. With funding from Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) –Multiculturalism, our workshops are designed for introductory to advanced learners. Utilizing recorded testimony of Holocaust survivors our educators teach new vocabulary and concepts related to citizenship, immigration, diversity, Canadian dates of remembrance and democratic values.

The initiative began as a pilot program in 2013-2014 at LINC schools across the GTHA. The partnership with CIC-Multiculturalism supports CIC’s mandate, as well as the Canadian Multiculturalism Act, by assisting in the integration of individuals and communities and helping them to contribute to building an integrated and socially cohesive society. It is a vision shared by the Neuberger Holocaust Education Centre.

Seminars are offered on site as well as at LINC (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada) Schools across the GTA. To inquire about a program please contact Michelle.

Phase 2

The second phase of the introductory workshops on the Holocaust invites past participants to visit our onsite location for a special seminar. These workshops use the Holocaust as a framework to uncover and analyze different concepts related to respect for human rights, diversity and democratic values, as well as the duty of Canadian citizens to promote democratic values and stand up against racism and prejudice, including antisemitism.

The goal of the program is to provide newcomers to Canada with a concise introduction to the Holocaust. The program focuses on the stories of Holocaust survivors who immigrated to Canada after the Second World War, and uses video excerpts to demonstrate how they learned English, built new lives, integrated into Canadian society and became proud and active members of Canadian civil society.
