PANEL

Discussants will examine the unique experience of women in the Holocaust and other genocides. Why have these narratives been largely excluded from the canon? How are scholars, writers, and artists working to share these stories and create a more complex and inclusive history? Panelists will also reflect on the ethics of writing gender history – can we hurt people in writing back the marginalized? Featuring an introduction from Holocaust survivor educator Judy Weissenberg Cohen who will discuss her pioneering project to create a website with multiple representation including academic scholarship, personal testimonies, poetry, literature and bibliography about Jewish women during the Holocaust.

Moderated by Dr. Joan Simalchik (director, University of Toronto Mississauga’s Women and Gender Studies Program) with panelists Dr. Anna Hajkova (associate professor, History, University of Warwick), Dr. Sara Horowitz (professor, comparative literature and Jewish Studies, York University), and Michele Mitchell, journalist and filmmaker (The Uncondemned).

Presented in partnership with Facing History and Ourselves.
