The Holocaust: 80 Years after Kristallnacht and the Conference at Evian

CLOSING NIGHT OF NEUBERGER HEW

Sir Andrew Burns, the UK’s first Special Envoy for post-Holocaust issues, former ambassador to Israel, and British High Commissioner to Canada, is an expert on the transnational effects of the Holocaust. He will address current international efforts to combat dangerous trends affecting civil society – among them antisemitism, Holocaust distortion and denial. Sir Andrew will also discuss the concerning impending loss of first-hand testimony and politicized rewriting of history.

No nation emerges with clean hands from a study of the Holocaust, but it is a critical component to prevent any recurrence of the barbarity that was inflicted on Europe in the 20th century and has been repeated time and time again in Asia, Africa, Europe and the Middle East. Sir Andrew will charge us to remain vigilant and committed to Holocaust remembrance and education. Closing Night of Holocaust Education Week will include a commemorative program and candle lighting marking the 80th anniversary of the Kristallnacht pogrom. This program will feature open captioning for accessibility.

Closing Night is generously co-sponsored by the families of the late Morris & Rose Glick and the late Max & Gutta Glicksman, Holocaust survivors; and by Scotiabank Bathurst & Sheppard Branch, with Eleanor & Martin Maxwell, in memory of his sisters, Josephine and Erna Meisels, who died in the Holocaust.
