There are many meanings for the word "shadow." An area of relative darkness; a hint, faint semblance; a reflection; shelter; a spectre; an inseparable companion. These meanings resonate with Bernice Eisenstein’s practise as an artist, working with words and images, through portraiture and collage, painting over the pages of existing books.  Eisenstein will discuss how she has come to understand memory and way it passes through us, informing our understanding and perception of the world.

Bernice Eisenstein is the author of the highly acclaimed graphic memoir, I Was a Child of Holocaust Survivors (Jewish Book Award 2007). It was adapted into a NFB animated short film which will be part of her presentation. Her most recent book, Correspondences, is a collaboration with writer Anne Michaels. Bernice’s artwork has appeared in exhibitions in Europe and the United States.
